California DMV: Being Dry While Hiving Isn’t Necessarily Dangerous

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Who likes to drive while high? Everyone who smokes pot and drives a car, that’s who. Recently, the California DMV has decided to the reasonable thing and make it policy for medicinal marijuana to be treated just like any other prescription drug when they consider whether or not to renew your license. Here’s the article.

Regulation would take it out of criminals’ control

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

——————————
I introduced AB390 not only to address California’s growing economic crisis but, more importantly, to begin a rational public policy discussion about how best to regulate the state’s largest cash crop, estimated to be worth roughly $14 billion annually. Placing marijuana under the same regulatory system that now applies to alcohol represents the natural evolution of California’s laws and is in line with recent polls indicating strong support for decriminalizing marijuana.

Medical marijuana could be a reality for Texas

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

As explained in this article, a medical marijuana bill has been filed in the Texas House of Representatives. Here is the full text of the bill.

How to help this bill pass (courtesy of Texas NORML):

On February 12, 2009, HB 164 was officially assigned to the Public Health Committee in the Texas House of Representatives. The most exciting part of this committee assignment is that the bill’s author, Rep. Elliott Naishtat (Austin), has been assigned to be Vice Chair of the committee! Also, HB 164 has picked up a co-author, Rep. Lon Burnam (Ft. Worth). If you, or someone you know, uses marijuana for a serious medical condition, and are willing to submit testimony to the Public Health Committee, please contact us as soon as possible (josh@texasnorml.org, 512-585-3846) so that we can coordinate an effective lobbying effort for HB 164.

Cannabis Use And IQ

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Does using cannabis affect your IQ? According to this peer-reviewed study, yes—however, the change is marginal and the direction may surprise you. In any case, cannabis use does not have a permanent effect on IQ and a couple months of abstinence should return even the heaviest of smokers to full cognitive function.

Marijuana Initiatives Pass Vote In Michigan and Massachusetts

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

From the article:

——————————

On election day, Michigan became the thirteenth state to legalize the physician supervised possession and use of cannabis. According to early returns, more than 60 percent of Michigan voters decided in favor of Proposal 1, which establishes a state-regulated system regarding the use and cultivation of medical marijuana by qualified patients.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, some 65 percent of voters (and virtually every town) decided “yes” on Question 2, which reduces minor marijuana possession to a fine-only offense. Like in Michigan, voters rejected a high-profile, deceptive ad campaign by the measure’s opponents, who argued that it would increase adolescent drug abuse, permit large-scale marijuana trafficking, endanger workplace safety, and sharply increase traffic fatalities.
